Meta introduced the Threads platform as a competitor to Twitter some time ago. The Threads account is integrated with the user’s Instagram account and once established, it cannot be terminated without deleting the associated Instagram account. Nevertheless, this procedure is expected to undergo modification in the near future, enabling users to delete their Threads account without forfeiting their Instagram profile.

During the ‘TechCrunch Disrupt’ event, Michel Protti, Meta’s chief privacy officer for product, announced that the social network is currently engaged in the development of a feature that will enable the complete deletion of a Threads account by December. Protti emphasized the technical complexities involved in allowing the deletion of a separate Threads account without inadvertently deleting the user’s entire Instagram account.

He stated, “We faced significant technical challenges in implementing the deletion feature for a Threads account while ensuring the preservation of the user’s overall Instagram account.”

Meta has devoted considerable attention to guaranteeing that users retain their right to delete their accounts. This has been achieved through various options such as deactivating the account to conceal all content, setting it to private, or selectively deleting individual threads.

The social networking company is currently engaged in efforts to incorporate Threads into the “fediverse”. As per the most recent data provided by Insider Intelligence, it is projected that Threads will have approximately 23.7 million active monthly users in the United States by the conclusion of 2023.

In contrast, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are expected to have 177.9 million, 135.2 million, and 102.3 million active monthly users in the United States, respectively, by the end of this year.
