Renowned Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is under intense scrutiny as a video of him purportedly thrashing a man with his shoe went viral on social media. In the graphic footage, the Qawwali maestro is seen engaging in physical violence while enquiring about a misplaced bottle, claiming the individual involved was his disciple.

In response, Khan issued a clarification in another video, describing the incident as a “personal matter between an ustaad and his shard (teacher and disciple).” He justified the altercation, stating that the relationship involved both love and discipline. Khan apologized to the man after the incident, emphasizing the personal nature of the dispute.

The disciple admitted misplacing a bottle containing holy water but asserted no malicious intent behind his actions. He referred to Khan as a father figure and denounced attempts to defame his ustaad.

However, netizens were quick to express their discontent, slamming Khan for what they deemed an “utterly shameful act.” Singer Chinmayi Sripaada joined the criticism, denouncing the assault on the ‘student’ and addressing the broader issue of protecting figures in authoritative positions. She described the incident as “horrendous” and called for an end to the protection granted to such figures based on their talent.

This comes after the widely circulated video, shared by Samaa TV, captures the singer demanding liquor from an individual and physically assaulting them in front of a crowd. Despite attempts to contextualize the incident as a personal matter, public sentiment remains critical, with many condemning the use of violence.
