The Indian government has finally revealed the recipients of the prestigious Padma Awards on Thursday. These awards considered the nation’s second-highest civilian honours after Bharat Ratna, span across categories such as arts, education, industry, literature, science, acting, medicine, social service, and public affairs. The unveiling of the awards, a customary practice on the eve of Republic Day, showcased the remarkable achievements of individuals who have made significant contributions to society.

Among the 132 distinguished awardees this year, veteran personalities from diverse fields were honoured. Notable figures include Vyjayantimala, Chiranjeevi, Mithun Chakraborty, renowned singer Usha Uthup, and accomplished composer Pyarelal Sharma. Vyjayantimala, at the age of 90, and Chiranjeevi, aged 68, were conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, recognizing their exceptional contributions to Indian cinema and society.

Chiranjeevi, with a career spanning over 160 films, adds the Padma Vibhushan to his accolades, having previously received the Padma Bhushan in 2006. The actor, who briefly ventured into politics, returned to the silver screen in 2017 after founding the Praja Rajyam Party in 2008.

Vyjayantimala, a Padma Shri awardee and celebrated as the first female superstar in Indian cinema, graced numerous iconic films such as “Devdas,” “Naya Daur,” “Gunga Jumna,” and “Jewel Thief.” Her recognition with the Padma Vibhushan reflects her enduring impact on the film industry.

Posthumously, the late Tamil actor and politician Vijayakanth were honored with the Padma Bhushan for his significant contributions to cinema and public service. Vijayakanth, known for films like “Vaidehi Kathirunthal” and “Chinna Gounder,” passed away in December 2023.

Other distinguished recipients include actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty, renowned pop queen Usha Uthup, and Pyarelal Sharma of the legendary music duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, all being awarded the Padma Bhushan for their remarkable contributions to the arts.

The list, comprising five Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri Awards, stands as a testament to the diversity and excellence within the Indian community. Notably, 30 women are among the awardees, with the list also featuring eight foreigners and paying tribute to nine posthumous recipients. The Padma Awards continue to be a symbol of honor, recognizing those whose efforts have left an indelible mark on the cultural and societal fabric of India.
