According to Deadline, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger recently announced that the sequel to the Dwayne Johnson-led animated movie, Moana will be released in theatres this year.

The announcement came during a CNBC interview before Disney Studios’ Q1 earnings call. “‘Moana’ remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Disney boss Bob Iger said in a statement. “We can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when ‘Moana 2’ comes to theaters this November.”

Originally developed as a TV series, the Moana sequel became a feature film reportedly after the company boss Iger was impressed with the footage.

The sequel to Disney’s 2016 children-favourite animated feature, Moana is all set to hit the theatre screens on November 27, 2024. Disney also released a teaser video for the sequel.

The sequel, directed by Dave Derrick Jr. will take audiences on a new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a new crew of unlikely seafarers. As per Disney, the film follows Moana who must journey to the far seas of Oceania after receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors. Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina are writing the music for Moana 2.

The original 2016 film voice starred Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana, a young woman who goes on an oceanic adventure with Dwayne Johnson’s Maui, a demigod of the wind and sea.

Disney also has a live-action Moana film planned for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role of Maui.
