The internet is ablaze with fury following the release of Jenna Ortega’s latest film, Miller’s Girl, which has stirred controversy over an explicit love scene between the 21-year-old actress and her 52-year-old co-star, Martin Freeman. The controversy stems from the significant 31-year age gap between the lead pair, igniting a storm of criticism across social media platforms.

In the film, Ortega portrays 18-year-old student Cairo, while Freeman takes on the role of her teacher, Jonathan Miller. Their characters become embroiled in an inappropriate relationship after Cairo’s provocative storytelling during Miller’s creative writing class.

Audiences wasted no time in expressing their disapproval of the steamy scenes, particularly condemning the age disparity as “troubling.” Twitter exploded with outrage, with users branding the movie as “gross” and questioning the ethics of such casting choices.

Critics have echoed the sentiments of audiences, with Miller’s Girl receiving a lackluster 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience scores barely fared better at 45%.

Even Ortega herself acknowledged the controversial nature of the film, conceding that she was initially taken aback by her character’s portrayal. Despite recognizing the importance of artistic risk-taking, Ortega admitted to feeling daunted by the role of Cairo, which challenged conventional perceptions of age-appropriate relationships.

Meanwhile, the film’s lukewarm reception stands in stark contrast to Ortega’s recent success, particularly her acclaimed portrayal of Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s Wednesday, which garnered nominations at prestigious award shows including the Golden Globe Awards, Primetime Emmys, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
