In 1997, Gates came across distressing news about children succumbing to treatable diseases in different parts of the world, while such ailments were curable in the United States. This revelation sparked a profound realization within Gates, compelling him to aspire for something greater than the success of the company he had established.

Reflecting on this transformative incident, Gates shared, “For a significant portion of my life, from the age of 18 to 40, my focus was entirely on Microsoft. It consumed me entirely. However, as others assumed leadership roles within the company, I had the opportunity to delve into the realm of global health challenges and understand the reasons behind the tragic loss of children’s lives.”

Gates highlights the shift in his priorities and the subsequent dedication he has shown towards addressing pressing health issues worldwide.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the charitable organization founded by him, has made significant contributions since 2000, amounting to $53.8 billion.

According to Gates, these investments have had a positive impact on their partners’ efforts to bring about change. One notable achievement is the significant reduction in the number of children dying before their fifth birthday, which has decreased by half since 2000. This progress has resulted in millions more children surviving, giving rise to a sense of optimism.

In a recent statement, Gates emphasized the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to create a more equitable world. He believes that by making intelligent investments now, we can bridge the gap between when innovations reach the affluent societies and when they reach the less privileged ones.

Gates expressed his views in a blog post titled ‘The road ahead reaches a turning point in 2024,’ where he highlighted the importance of drawing lessons from global health to ensure fairness in the development and implementation of AI.
