With every superhero movie release, fans become more and more cautious about the story. For instance, 2023 saw the rise of average projects such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Shazam: God of Fury, and The Flash to name a few. Naturally, with growing distrust, fans turn to critics—or Rotten Tomatoes and IMBD—to know how the movie is before the pay for the ticket. After all, ticket prices are rising, and most people don’t want to commit to something that will bore them.
However, in some cases, such critique is also met with bias. The prime example of this is The Marvels, which initially had 54% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. People on social media were quick to point out how the scoring reflects the bias against an all women of colour, as well as the general dislike for Brie Larson. As soon as more review started coming in the score jumped up to 60%, with the audience score now standing at 85%.
I saw 100 tweets saying the movie is getting positive reviews??😭😭

Doesn’t really matter people will find a way to mindlessly hate on it without seeing the movie, just like The Flash

Previously, too, Insider revealed that Captain Marvel, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Black Panther, were also victims of review bombing, or dude bros criticism. A spokesperson from Rotten Tomatoes revealed that it was due to having people of colour at the forefront, or women, in most cases. Considering Larson has been so vocal about #MeToo movement, and even calling out people like Harvey Winstein. At that time, she said, “To live life as a woman is to live life on the defense. As always, I stand with the brave survivors of sexual assault and harassment. It’s not your fault. I believe you.”
Critics are wrong with this one… proceeds to say what critics said, but give it a higher rating.

Some negative reviews are just weird and carry a disturbing undertone. pic.twitter.com/p1Sb98y49m

Moreover, this negativity spreads beyond Rotten Tomatoes, with many saying on social media that the film does no stand up to the mark. The arguments are exactly clear, which hints that people calling the film out before watching it definitely have some issue with either the studio or the cast. In addition, Rotten Tomatoes was accused of having paid reviews to boost the sale of the film. Since a website has been tainted like this, it becomes increasingly difficult to take whatever they say or do as credible source.
Eternals hate and The Marvels hate is mostly racism snd sexism so I’m not taking it seriously https://t.co/z05xvi7zGm

You forget there’s loads of sexism in the world until a film like The Marvels is due to release. It’s really sad to see.

Jeremy from the Quatering is probably one of them. as that dude has an unhealthy obsession with Brie Larson he’s made countless videos about her

I love how the creative team was like: “We have Brie Larson and 2 POCs as the leads, and Nia Dacosta as the director, what else can we possibly do to enrage the incels even further?”
“Add in a musical number.”

If I had to choose any actor/actress where marvel absolutely wasted their talent, it would be Brie Larson
They didn’t just take an Oscar winner and not only give her some of the most awkward dialogue ever written but ALSO set her up to be a scapegoat for online incels https://t.co/UsDFkNrCSA

not all but most of the reviews of the marvels in rotten tomatoes so far are from white men, should i pretend to be surprised? pic.twitter.com/96igrxO82n

They’re REALLY not dispelling the whole “Angry white dude” stereotype, are they?

This one is weird too 💀 pic.twitter.com/bHxTO8ksLu

But it must be noted that it’s time for people to actually take a call for themselves than depend on what other reviewers have to say. The Marvels, in no sense, is perfect, but is much more fun than Quantumania or even The Flash. MCU, in general, is in a ditch (all thanks to Disney+), but that doesn’t negate the fact that they are trying. The Marvels, like every other superhero movie, is about beating the bad guy. However, gradually we realize that the story is a tad more complicated than that. You’ll have to watch to find it out.
Coming back to The Marvels critic score, one needs to understand the importance of a good superhero film is the ability to re-watch it again. In this regard, The Marvel does a great job, and will be remembered by fans. Moreover, ee continue to hope that this indifference soon come to an end.
