In the summertime of 2020, we heard about Boots Riley’s new present, “I am a Virgo.” Now, this summer season we lastly get to see it. Set in Oakland, the quirky comedy revolves round Cootie (performed by Jharrel Jerome), a 13-foot-tall 19-year-old Black man, as he navigates life in a world that is not fairly what it appears. Formally described as, “a legendary odyssey that questions the aim of the legendary odyssey.”
The primary 4 episodes of the present not too long ago premiered at a movie pageant within the Bay Space, getting a “rapturous response” in response to SFGate:
With out giving freely an excessive amount of, “I am a Virgo” turns the ubiquity of the superhero film on its head, offering a larger-than-life commentary on the commodification of Black tradition, the failures of our well being care system, the results of capitalism and extra. What’s extra, not like the CGI-laden tent pole Marvel blockbusters, “I am a Virgo” employs sensible results, compelled perspective photographs and stop-motion animation. It is a quintessentially Oakland story that is equal elements amusing and absurd, darkish and decided — and in contrast to something I’ve ever seen.
All seven episodes of “I am a Virgo” will drop on Prime Video (summer season date TBA).
