After ten years, six months, four weeks, and a day of waiting, Attack on Titan fans had the closure they didn’t know they needed. On November 5, Japan finally aired the show’s finale, which left many fans in tears (literally). The outpour of love for the show on social media is insane, with millions of viewers (including those who have read the manga) hailing it as one of the most iconic shows ever.

The beauty of Attack on Titan lies in its spectacular narrative, the insane visuals, and the symbolism that resonates so well with today’s time. The anime reveals the cycle of violence—and how history—as we often say, is written by the victors. In this case—it was Marleys—who couldn’t understand the power of Eldians and chose to subjugate an entire community. Similarly, in our real world, stories of the coloniser and the colonised are often pitted against each other. No matter how factually correct either narrative is, it’s up to people how they perceive it.

As manga creator Hajime Isayama explained to The New York Times about the ending: “It kind of seems like it’s not even believable. It’s just not plausible in the world we’re living in right now. And so, sadly, I had to give up on that kind of happy ending,”

However, what made the show so great were the themes of freedom, sacrifice, and the cyclical nature of humanity. Despite Eldians becoming power-hungry and then killing people, only in turn another fresh set of problems proves that we never learn from history. In doing so, the scars of injustice become fresh wounds, and one never truly heals from that. In addition, Attack on Titan was also one show that allowed people across the globe to come together, as One Piece and Dragon Ball Z did. It enabled people to express their joy, frustration, or theories in Reddit forums, on Twitter or Quora, and the sense of community kept building.

While many fans are currently upset about the way the show ended, they need to see how the ending speaks volumes about the story and the author. As Isayama explained it, “I was tied down to what I had originally envisioned when I was young. And so, manga became a very restrictive art form for me, similar to how the massive powers that Eren acquired ended up restricting him.”

Some must also draw parallels to Game of Thrones, whose ending, despite being poor, does not take away from the way the narrative was woven. Moreover, as the world progresses, such shows only go on to prove the significance of politics, weaved with fiction. Sure, a lot depends on the execution, too. But if your base (that is, the story) and character development are in place, and if the narrative is logical (without massive plot holes), it will sail. In this regard, Attack on Titan manages to hit bulls-eyes in all the departments. Due to its insane popularity, transcended the bar set by anime viewers by leaps and bounds.

We can vouch that a decade later, too, AOT will continue to wow audiences and captivate them with its spellbinding themes.
