Palestine has stormed into the Asian Cup Round of 16 for the very first time, creating history.

On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Palestine reached the Asian Cup knockout rounds after beating Hong Kong 3-0. This is their maiden win in the history of the soccer tournament.

After missing out on the second spot in Group C of Asian Cup 2023, Palestine has advanced as one of the four best third-placed teams.

The Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar celebrated the Palestine team’s historic victory over Hong Kong against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian striker Oday Dabbagh turned out to be the hero of the game for his two goals on Tuesday. In the 12th minute, Palestine scored their first goal. Their second goal came minutes into the second half from Zaid Qunbar. Palestine got their third goal, also from Dabbagh.

Several Palestinian players and staff have reportedly lost their loved ones in the ongoing conflict and wished to provide some comfort to people suffering back home before the tournament. A moment’s silence was also observed before the game but was overrun by shouts of “Free Palestine”.

Last week on Thursday, Palestine fought for a chance to stay at the ongoing 2023 AFC Asian Cup and a spot in the last 16 against the United Arab Emirates with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates stormed to the Round of 16 in second place despite losing 2-1 to group C winners Iran on Tuesday.
